Curtis stared at the tiny strip of land which seemed to be sinking deep into the dark, rippling waters of the ocean. Was this the last time he would ever see his home? The world was vast and full of spectacular sights to be seen, but somehow this mundane village seemed the hardest to leave behind. This voyage marked a new life for him: one that traded the comforts of a family and home for the adventure and freedom that comes with a lawless life. Salty air flitted around him like the churning water below, but the boy simply rested himself against the sturdy wall of the ship and sighed. Would he really be able to start a new life out here?

Captain Dagger moved up from where he had been stood, giving the new recruit a chance to adjust. It was always hard for the young ones but Leon hadn't been about to refuse a boy whom had come to him virtually begging for a chance to sail with them. Especially when they were so short on crew. Ruby probably would've argued against it, but as the Captain was reminded everyday, Ruby was no longer on board.
He stood behind the boy and gently placed a hand on his shoulder in a gesture of friendship.

Curt heard footsteps approaching him from behind and straightened up, almost embarassed to be caught off guard as he had. He took in a deep breath and prepared to be reprimanded for his soft behavior. Staring up at the Captain with an emotionless expression, he collected his thoughts and pushed them away for later inspection. The man lifted his hand, but Curtis resolutely held his place, utterly surprised when it came to rest gently on his shoulder. Hazel eyes studied the man as he tried to understand his intentions by this kind and unlikely action. He at last let his eyes turn back on the land which was now just a dot on the horizon. Perhaps it wouldn't be so hard to move onward after all...

The Captain gave a gentle smile to the boy before removing his hand and preparing to turn and ensure that the crew were working...for once. However he spoke gently before moving away.
We will be back one day lad, and though it may be hard to imagine, you may well be better off for leaving.

Curtis continued to stare out over the sea's glimmering, blue surface as the man remove his hand, but at once felt unease in his absence. He surely couldn't expect the others to be this accepting, and he needed to take whatever friendship was offered him. This was the first time he would see many of these faces, and it was up to him to make a good impression upon them before it was too late. He hurried after the man. "I'm Curtis DeLaine," he began strongly, offering a thin white hand to the man without an sign of reservation. "I take you are the Captain of this ship... I'm glad to be here. Thank you for the kindness of letting me sail with you."
