Ruby entwined her arm with Cody's for a moment, smiling up at the boy, who was now several inches taller than her. I resent you for being taller than me, Cody. What ever happened to that little fifteen year old I met, quick to be embarrassed? I barely recognize you anymore. she told him, her smile never leaving her face, though her eyes did become sorrowful for a moment. But, he still seemed to be her Cody. She loved the man he'd nearly become, but missed the boy nonetheless. They had left the twins with Addy to find a shop for Cody to set up. Ruby didn't know how long they would be in Kaiden, but they certainly weren't just going to sit around until Dagger picked them up. Ruby hated doing nothing, so she did it as little as possible. She had enough money to set up shop with Cody, and that was what they planned on doing.

Cody smiled and squatted down so Ruby was taller than himself and kept walking, "First of all," he started, "I'm barely taller than you..." Cody lied, it felt like he grew a centemeter a day. "And second of all, I still get embarrassed at things people say, my face just doesn't get as red, anymore." he replied. As they walked down the streets, he surveyed all around him. Children playing with anything they could find, traders hollering what they had to offer, and women sitting on the steps of their stores and houses, gossiping about the days events lazily. He was growing fond of Kaiden.

Rubes knew that Cody was humoring her- he was more than just a little taller than her. But she appreciated that he would stretch the truth on her behalf. She laughed as he bent down, slapping his upper arm lightly. You can stand up straight now, child! she exclaimed, laughing again. Spending time with Cody made Ruby delightfully happy.
She, too, looked around Kaiden. There were many things that seemed the same to her, and many that seemed different. She loved the city as she had before, and hoped Cody was enjoying his stay. One of the great things about him was that she knew she'd get an honest answer if she asked. How do you like it here, Cody? she asked, slightly worried suddenly. Do you regret leaving the Howl? she wondered. Already the name sounded foreign on her lips. She hadn't thought much about the ship lately- only its crew members. She wondered how they were faring, and when she'd be back on board.

Cody smiled at Ruby and straitened out, "I love it here, although its hard not to miss the Howl. The feel of being needed, of being wanted...it's just nice knowing that there is always a place that you are needed, and thats The Howl" he mused pensively. Cody looked out towards the water, his gaze sweeping the horizon, as if he were searching for the Ship he called his home.

Ruby frowned, nodding. If I weren't so selfish, I'd have tried to make you stay. she said. I act like more of a child than the twins do. Ruby said, caught in a web of bitterness. I regret the decision, I do. she told him, biting her lip and looking at his violet orbs. A lone tear escaped her eye, and she stopped walking, leaning against the side of a building and observing the bustling city. Her eyes watched, but her thoughts wandered. If not for me, Cody would be out at the sea where he belongs, and I'd be here with my girls... My family. Leon... well, Leon Dagger needn't be apart of it. The Howl will always be before me on his priority list. she thought, her observation with a selfish ring to it.
And why not? He didn't expect children. It was a one time fling.
Ahhh, but it wasn't a one time fling. a voice in her head told her. He loves you and you love him too. He wants to marry you!
He's already married to that ship. she hissed angrily, clenching her fists and silently beginning to cry. She found her red lace handkerchief and wiped her eyes furiously, realizing she had just voiced her thought aloud. Looking up at Cody, she smiled weakly. Those eyes. she thought. They had enchanted her so, eyes so very like her own. But they had a distinct Codyness about them. There was a spark there that Ruby was sure she couldn't possibly possess. She had once felt attracted to Cody... Even though he was too young for her... Too young for her in years, but she was too young for him in intelligence. She always found away to cause trouble. She relied on the boy, but knew he wasn't hers to keep. He'd leave her someday, and she would be happy for him. He'd have children of his own. Violet and Olivia would be dear to him, but he was their godfather, not their father. Ruby couldn't expect him to stay forever, and she didn't want him to. For his sake, if not her own.
And why was she selfish with Dagger, but not Cody? Why was Cody allowed to leave her someday, but not Dagger? Because Cody is my best friend and I love him and want him to be happy... Always happy.
But Dagger... has my heart. I can't truly live without my heart, now can I? I miss its beating, pounding like it does when I'm with him. I only have a small piece of it now, and that part aches for the whole.
After her brief epiphany, Rubes nodded determinedly, and looked up at Cody, smiling sheepishly. Sorry, I was having an epiphany. You know... the usual. Turns out I love Dagger and I love you and I want you to be happy, and I regret letting you come with me to shore, when the Howl is where you probably would rather be. she summarized. After a moment, she scowled. I'm not sure I actually learned much... Just came out of denial. she murmured pensively. After a moment, she came out of her daze and lead him towards the first shop, map in hand.

Cody looked down, "I...I'm glad I came." he mumbled. He was enjoying his time on land. He did miss the ship, but he knew he would go back sooner or later. "Is this the shop?" he asked curiously. He saw potential, but he was sure that he could see potential in anything that could be his.

Ruby smiled softly, her eyes crinkling slightly, the only wrinkles she possessed. Laugh lines. When Cody inquired about the shop, she replied, This is one of the several that I want you to look at; I went through the newspaper with a fine tooth comb and there are four that I thought looked promising. she said, looking about. She wanted the neighborhood that the shop was in to be welcoming, and middle class if possible. She wanted to be close enough to the nobles as to catch their eye with Cody's fine needlework, but also vendor to regular citizens as well. This neighborhood was charming, with cute little shops as well as some small houses about. Ruby smiled again, and looked down at her paper. This one's got four rooms; a main room for displays and business, a back sewing room where the actual work gets done, a small storage closet for keeping the supplies in, and a lav. she said, using her term for a restroom. The seller should be here now. Let's take a look. she said, meeting the boy's eyes. She winked, and gestured for him to lead. For your consideration, milord.

((Mind if I butt in? Ash is getting dusty. I'll delete the post if it is unwanted ^0~ ))
Just then a boy hurried out of the shop, colliding with Cody. The papers and inks he had been holding fell to the ground, the ink bottles breaking and leaking out the black liquid all over the papers. "Oh!" the boy exclaimed, and then, "Oh," quite a bit more sullenly. He'd get a good whacking for this, he would.
He just then remembered he had run into someone, and looked up quickly, embarrassed. "Oh, oh my!" he said, scrambling for words. "I'm so terribly sorry sir! Did I get any ink on you? I'm so sorry!" He hurried to collect the papers anxiously. "I'll pay for any new shirts you might need! I'm sorry!" He seemed quite out of breath, almost as much as he was out of words. He continued to repeat 'I'm sorry' as he gathered the mess and gripped it tightly to his chest, the ink staining his musty brown shirt.

Cody peered down at the boy as he gathered up his things. He hoped the papers were not too important, for it seemed that the documents were damaged beyond repair. "Are you alright? It seems I smashed your ink bottles when we collided. Do you need a hand with those things?" Cody offered, noticing the ink was dripping on the boys clothing.

((haha, Moon. You're always welcome.))
Ruby bent over to aid the boy who had rushed out of the shop. She began picking up the sopping papers, wrinkling her nose at the smell of the concentrated ink and avoiding getting her corset blackened by holding the papers away from her body. Oh, don't worry about Cody. He and his shirt are fine. Is there anything we can do to get you out of trouble? she asked, assessing the boy's age to come to the conclusion that he worked for another here in Kaiden. Having spent her summers here with orphan boys with cruel masters, she wondered if the tradition to hit those who slip up had remained. I know there are some employers whose hands hurt more than their sharp tongues. This wasn't your fault. Bad luck is all it was. she said, quieter now, speaking loud enough for the boy's young ears only, and maybe Cody's if he was close enough. She straightened up and handed the boy a stack of ruined papers while continuing, If you need more supplies, I'd be happy to give you money to replace these. It wouldn't be any trouble.

Ashai smiled gratefully at Ruby, taking the papers, then bowed slightly to them. "Oh- n-no, it's fine," he stammered at their offers. He glanced fully at them then, biting his lip. "Are you pirates?" he asked curiously. They didn't act like it. "My brother is a pirate, I think. I never knew him, but a couple years back I saw him at my father's funeral. He slipped away before I could talk to him, though. Very mysterious fellow. His name was Jaydon..." Ash seemed to be day dreaming for a second, before he snapped out of it. "Oh dear, I'm talking too much, I'm sorry! I, er, are you here to see the manager? Just- er- follow me, I'll take you to him..." Still clutching the papers and broken ink bottles, he started back into the shop.
((Hmm... Jaydon... sounds similar to Jay... -nudgenudgehint- ... -shot- ))
