Simplified Pirate Rankings- Updated/Revised

Some people don't understand or don't want to take the time to read those lengthy descriptions that have been provided. I personally enjoyed them, but summed them up for all of you guys
right here. So please view your rank so you know what to do, and you can look at other ranks that you like as well, for future characters. I also encourage you to look at the original Rankings, they are more descriptive.They are not necessarily in their original order, because I grouped people who work together.

Flint: I added some of the ranks that were used by Captain Dagger, but have changed the description

Captain: Often-elected commander of ship, in charge of route and running the ship. If a Captain does poorly, he faces death or severe punishment from the crew. When any meetings go on, the Captain makes the final decision.

Lieutenant: A Lieutenant is the deputy to a Captain, and becomes Captain if the first dies. But he/she also commands in the Captain's absence, or if the Captain is sick. He/she also helps command in battles, and might take one part of the ship under his command while the Captain takes another. He has an important say in meetings, though the Captain makes the final decision.

Master: A Master is in charge of the general navigation and sailing of the ship, like the Pilot (described later). He is in charge of the Pilot's actions, and could be pretty much called a 'Master Pilot', for he is a Pilot with more experience. He has an important say in meetings as well.

Pilot: A Pilot is a crew member skilled at navigation, on sea AND shore, using compasses, maps and stars as guides. They often steer the ship, but the Captain, Lieutenant, and Boatswain will take the wheel as they feel necessary- so the Pilot finds something else to do until they're done. Pilots often fight in battles, instead of steer, because someone of higher rank often does instead. A lot of pirate ships don't have someone ranked 'Pilot', because the Master or Captain would take the position.

Boatswain: A Boatswain is responsible for supervising the actual sailing of the ship, to make sure everything runs smoothly, and is responsible for the cables and ropes, also the anchors when they stop or come to shore. A Boatswain could be called the 'Master Gunner', for they make sure that the Gunners (described later) are maintaining and shooting the cannons correctly. They are in charge of any Coxswains, and teach Apprentice Boatswains.

Apprentice Boatswain: A junior Boatswain who is learning to become a Coxswain or Boatswain in the future. They learn by doing the tasks and duties of the Boatswain, and have similar duties. They take a piece of the Boatswain's salary, an amount previously agreed on by the two.

Coxswain: NOT the same as an Apprentice Boatswain, but many Apprentice Boatswains go on to become a Coxswain on the same ship. A Coxswain is a junior officer to the Boatswain, but has already learned the duties of a Boatswain. The most senior of the Coxswains will become the next Boatswain, and helps the Boatswain.

Gunner: Maintains and shoots cannons. Most ships have a Gunner for at least every other cannon. When the cannons are in good order and no battles are occurring, they take the position of a general sailor who is directed by the Captain and the Lieutenant.

Carpenter: Repair damaged rooms underdeck, and keep the masts and other ship parts in good order. They are experienced in their trade and in being a member of the crew. When no repairs are needed, they too are general sailors. Carpenters often take an apprentice, as described later.

Mate: General sailor who is very experienced as a seaman and has an important opinion in votes and meetings. They supervise and manage the crew, and also discipline them as necessary. The decide what Pilots, Sailmakers and Carpenters do while they are general sailors, and direct any sailors who are just general sailors by profession (described later). Almost every pirate ship has only had one mate, but the Mate chooses a senior sailor to help him/her. Mates are often people who have been on ships most of their life.

Quartermaster:A Quartermaster is an moderately experienced sailor who has important duties. They are generally popular with the crew, and represent the crew when talking or negotiating with the captain in a meeting of some sort.

Sailmaker: The Sailmaker mends and makes sails, as well as flags and often slop clothing when necessary. They also act as general sailors under the rule of the Mate when they don't have trade-specific.

Doctor: Few pirate ships have volunteer Surgeons or Doctors, most are forced to join when other ships sink or they can be captured on land. The Doctor treats injuries and ensures the general health of the crew by checking up on them and doing his/her best to make sure the crew don't eat toxic or rotten food.

Cook: Prepares food, checks for poison, and rations water. Many cooks are unexperienced or taken from land or another ship. Few professionals join pirate ships voluntarily (like the doctors).

General Sailor: This man or woman is placed under the command of the Master, Captain, or Lieutenant and does general duties like fighting and keeping watch. Most General Sailors will be assigned to a specific rank later. General Sailors are most often people without a specialty or has a specialty but there is nothing to do in that field at this point in time.

Mate/Apprentice: Every position except Captains, Lieutenants, and Coxswains can have an apprentice, or mate as many call them. Salary for the apprentice is taken out of the mentor's pay and is agreed upon when the job is taken. An Apprentice is a person in training to fill whatever job skill they are learning, and may find work on the same ship or another when their training is complete. They learn by doing the tasks and duties of the Boatswain, and have similar duties.
